Learn about the scary side of Cornwall
This session is designed to not only ignite their artistic side but also introduce them to the fascinating legends that have shaped Cornwall’s rich folklore.
Discover the Myths:
The Beast of Bodmin Moor: A shadowy, panther-like creature said to roam the misty moors of Cornwall, the Beast of Bodmin has captivated imaginations for generations. With glowing eyes and a sleek black form, this legendary beast is thought to be a wild cat—or perhaps something even more mysterious—lurking in the wilds of Bodmin Moor.
St. Michael’s Giant – Cormoran: The tale of Cormoran, the giant of St. Michael’s Mount, is one of the most famous Cornish legends. This enormous figure is said to have terrorized locals before being defeated by the brave Jack the Giant-Killer. With immense strength and a towering presence, Cormoran symbolizes the might and mystery of Cornwall’s legendary giants.
Pixies of the Moors: In the forests and moorlands of Cornwall, pixies are said to hide, guiding lost travelers or playing mischievous tricks. These small, magical beings wear pointed hats and are known for their love of nature and playful spirit. Often depicted as friendly, pixies are beloved figures in Cornish folklore, representing the enchantment of the countryside.
What Your Child Will Do:
During this interactive pottery session, children will learn about these myths through storytelling and get the chance to bring these legendary creatures to life in clay. Under the guidance of our expert instructors:
Create the Beast of Bodmin Moor: Kids can sculpt their own version of this wild and mysterious creature, focusing on its sleek body, glowing eyes, and sharp features.
Shape St. Michael’s Giant: Using their imagination, young artists will build their own mighty giant, crafting its oversized limbs, strong stance, and rugged features to depict the famous giant of Cornish legend.
Design Playful Pixies: With clay, children will craft small, detailed pixie figures, adding magical elements like pointed hats, tiny wings, and mischievous grins.
Take Home the Magic
Each child will take home their own handmade mythical creature, beautifully decorated and full of character, along with a deeper understanding of Cornwall’s legendary past. Whether they choose to craft a fearsome beast, a towering giant, or a playful pixie, this is a chance to combine creativity with storytelling.
